I didn't realise you had to erase first; thought I could write to unused flash on top of soft device. Once I erased it all worked.

That is good so nRF connect Desktop appears to be working. You can now erase the board and load the hex files you want.

I've used the "check for updates now" button in "settings"; is there anything else to update?

I selected a device from "select Device", the app finds the device & reads its memory OK, confirms there is a softdevice loaded.

Make sure you update the nRF connect Desktop core and the programmer apps.

Did you select a device on the "select device" pulldown ?

I've installed the app, but the "write all to devkit" button is not enabled.

I've tried j-link drivers V6.22g, no change. I also tried uninstalling and rolling back to older versions of the IAR EWARM, same result. I think this problem may have arisen when I upgraded to V8-30 of EWARM, but I've tried uninstalling 8-30 & installing 8-11 and 8-22 with no change.

Can you consider switching to the nRF connect desktop https://www.nordicsemi.com/eng/Products/Bluetooth-low-energy/nRF-Connect-for-Desktop#Downloads , This should allow you to do whatever is nRFgo Studio is currently being used for.

I have experienced similar problems after I installed JLink version 6.32d. Version 6.20 worked fine. Can you upgrade or downgrade your JLink version?
