Right now i am using Blinky example in Peripheral section of SDK15 (S140). I would like to enable Coded PHY (BLE_GAP_PHY_CODED) instead of default setting (BLE_GAP_PHY_1MBPS). My aim is to test long range using Coded PHY as compare to BLE_GAP_PHY_1MBPS

RE: Enable Coded PHY (Long Range) for Peripheral Blinky code

Yes you need another PCA10056 or a different IC that support BLE with Coded phy. Please refer to these blog posts for more info about BLE 5 and coded phy:

Bluetooth 5 in Smartphones

https://www.novelbits.io/bluetooth-5-advertisements/

http://blog.bluetooth.com/exploring-bluetooth-5-going-the-distance

To boost the range you should max out the TX power. The nRF52840 IC on the pCA10056 supports up to +8 dBm output power while the nRF52832 on the PCA10036 only supports 4 dBm. If you are using a softdevice you can use the function sd_ble_gap_tx_power_set() to set the output power.

Here is an informative blog post on range: Tested by Nordic: Bluetooth Long Range.

RE: Enable Coded PHY (Long Range) for Peripheral Blinky code

Hi,

So if i want to test Coded PHY long range, it can only be done using other PCA10056 board?? Is there any other medium??

One more question, If i need to perform range test of nRF52832 vs nRF52840 what configuration i should set?

I tried Blinky code form SDK11 for PCA10036 and SDK15 for PCA10056 with same configurations. I found both of them had same range. What configuration i can change for PCA10056 to get long range. ADV interval and Tx Power should be same for both boards. Any changes other then that ?

Thanks,

Your phone probably doesn't support coded phy so you can't expect to see any coded phy devices showing up in your app. I'm not aware of any phones that support it yet, and only a few phones currently support 2Mbps.

RE: Enable Coded PHY (Long Range) for Peripheral Blinky code

Hello Martin,

Thanks for your quick reply, above thing worked now my code is running successfully. There are no error and i can see UART message of "Blinky example started"

But strange thing is i can't see my device advertisement in BLE scanner app when PHY coded is enabled. Is there any other thing i need to take care off??

Does it has dependency over Phone ??

Thanks,

.filter_policy = BLE_GAP_ADV_FP_ANY,
.interval      = APP_ADV_DURATION, // <- BUG? INTERVAL NOT DURATION
.duration      = 0,

You have effectively set the advertising interval to 0, which is not allowed and hence the function returns error 7 (NRF_ERROR_INVALID_PARAM).
