I deem it highly unlikely that there is support for persistently storing the device name, since it is not stored when you write to it directly. If there is another way then this is not obvious, so the best approach is to ask the manufacturer. But I would not get the hops up...

I'm posting a screen shot of what happens when I change the name using the Master control panel. Hoping that maybe I don't know what to do and you can guide me to make the name change stick. Should I look for anything in particular to see if the name change is supported? Notice that I can change the name and add a number to it 01

Hi,

Well, It all depend on the firmware that Raytac and/or Little Bits has made, then. I suggest you contact them to ask if they have support for persistently changing the device name in their firmware.

So does this involve the use of a compiler and having a copy of the firmware? Because I have neither of them.

I was hoping that your Master control panel app could do this, I can rename the ID with the app but it is not transferred to the BLE module it seems.

The BLE modules are made by Raytac and Little Bits could have customised for their use.

Hi John,

You need to update the firmware of the devices to add support for this using a programmer or OTA DFU, so it may be a bit of a problem if these devices are already in the field. Assuming you can program the devices once you can do something like the following:

Make sure the device name is writable (open), as indicated here.
When there is a write to the device name characteristic:
1. write that device name to flash using FDS so that it is can be read and used after any subsequent reset.
2. call sd_ble_gap_device_name_set() with the new device name, and restart advertising if already advertising in order to use the new name, as indicated here.
At startup, read the device name from flash and set it using sd_ble_gap_device_name_set().

Please note that the phones may cash the device name for some time, so you may not necessarily see the new name when you scan with for example an iPhone until you connect to it.

I lost my post maybe I don't know how to drive the forum! So we'll continue the thread elsewhere I think.

The answer seems to indicate some form of recompiling code and reprogramming rather than just, say, use the Control Panel app from here to edit the string, I can see the ID string name in hex but no way of editing it.

The advertising name has to be configured as writable in the module firmware.

Also note the warning in this thread that tablets may cache the names - so, if you do get this working, you may need to restart the tablet's BT for the change to be displayed:
