If you want modify the data of the beacon module, you have to put the beacon into configuration mode. However the userguide for the nRF51822 Bluetooth® Smart Beacon Kit says the following: "While the app works with beacons from any manufacturer, the Configuration Mode is available only on the Nordic Beacon provided in this kit because it’s preloaded with firmware from Nordic Semiconductor."

Thus, you need an nRF51 beacon that is shipped with beacon FW. However the source code for the nrf Toolbox app can be found here, which provides much of the same functionality as the nRF Connect app.
