The board was stuck in reset state. Connecting the reset pin to vdd made sure it could exit the reset state.

That did the trick, thank you. I connected P0.18 to Vdd and then J-Link connected to the board. Then I used 'nrfjprog' to erase the UICR, I did not run the full recovery. Now J-Link connects and the board is back working again without having to connect P0.18 to Vdd. Not sure why.

Did you enable pinreset? Can you try to connect the reset pin to vdd and run the recovery sequence again?

Thank you for your reply. Yes, the target is powered and and the SWD connections are OK. I run the command 'nrfjprog --recover -f nrf52 --log' twice. Here are the log files, that look somewhat different.

I assume you have checked that the device is powered and the connection is ok? Can you test nrfjprog --recover --log (with the log option that is)?
