I'm wondering about how those BLE trackers (i.e. Tile , Trackr) work. Specifically, what kind of advertisement strategy makes sense for these types of devices, given their two main features.

Main Features:
1) Advertise

RE: insights on how BLE tracker / keyring "Tile" products work?
I don't have any clear answer here, as I don't know the details. You may get an nRF sniffer tool and for instance sniff the advertisment and communication: https://www.nordicsemi.com/Software-and-Tools/Development-Tools/nRF-Sniffer

It is possible to change advertisement on the fly, to for instance swap between non connectable and connectable advertisement, and also change the advertisement data.

You may use this online power calculator the get current consumption estimates depending on advertisement mode, interval and packet size: https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/power/

Best regards,
Kenneth
