I want to use the nRF51822 as a gateway to send uart-commands from the µC to my iPhone and vice versa.
µC---|uart|--->nRF51822 ) ) ) ) BLE ( ( ( ( iPhone
Do I need a custom service for that? Or is it sufficient to simply take the BLE_RX

RE: UART-Gateway Usecase: Custom service?

The application note is now out! We have seen this need as well, and as I've noted elsewhere, there is work ongoing on making an application note explaining this. This document should hopefully be out in not too long, although I can't yet give a definite date.

RE: UART-Gateway Usecase: Custom service?

Hi Ole,

thanks for your feedback.

While searching the forum for anything related to UART I also found the ble_app_uart example and I'm trying to understand how it works.

I'm extremely motivated and I already got myself books about Bluetooth Low Energy to understand it from the basis, but it's still difficult for me to get an focus on what screws to turn.

I'd be very glad if you could supply us a how-to guide for creating a custom service - maybe also while having in mind that some of us are beginners, not in RF, but in therms of "bluetooth" or "ble".

Best regards,
Stephan

RE: UART-Gateway Usecase: Custom service?

This sounds very similar to the ble_app_uart example that has been posted here on the Developer Zone. Please note that this isn't a fully tested application, it's more of a demo made to show that it's possible.

Also, what you want isn't normally something I'd recommend. You can take a look at this question for a little more background on that. You'll most likely often be better off by creating a custom service for your use case that to cram your custom data into UART packets.

RE: UART-Gateway Usecase: Custom service?

Laird's BL600 module which comes with BASIC language firmware offers all that out of the box.
