&lt;p&gt;nRF Connect uses a serial port connection to a local DK or Dongle with special &amp;quot;connectivity&amp;quot; firmware. The firmware is based on serialization examples from the nRF5 SDK, with some added patches. See the &lt;a href="https://github.com/NordicSemiconductor/pc-ble-driver/tree/master/hex"&gt;hex folder of the pc-ble-driver&lt;/a&gt; project on github. nRF Connect currently uses the branch tagged v2.3.2.&lt;/p&gt;
