&lt;p&gt;You need to make sure the size and shape of the tag antenna and the reader antenna is as similar as possible to maximize the field coupling. In addition the antennas should not be enclosed by metal planes. Also you need to make sure that both antennas are tuned, see &lt;a href="https://www.nordicsemi.com/DocLib/Content/White_Papers/nwp_026/latest/WP/nwp_026/nWP_026_intro"&gt;this application note&lt;/a&gt;. Achieving 3cm is typically possible, but exceeding 3cm might not be as easy.&lt;/p&gt;
