OK. It's working with the latest mfw_nrf9160_1.2.2

Evidently the DK as supplied did not have a sufficient version.

I just read this discussion that is 2 years old. Hopefully the firmware shipping with nRF9160-DK is current. I acquired one this summer (2020) but GPS seems not to be working.

Which firmware version should I be using and where to download it from?

Hi,

This should not be needed, it should already now acquire satellite reception. Note that this is still very undetermined as development and characterization still is not finished.

On March 31 when modem FW will support GPS, will an external powered antenna still be required when using the nRF9160 DK?

Hi,

Yes, the modem FW, i.e. the FW which controls the modem on the nRF9160 does not have support for using the GPS functionality yet. This applies for the nRF9160 DK and any custom board with nRF9160. Once this has been added and released, both nRF9160 DK and any custom board with nRF9160 will be able to read GPS position.

Even if I have a custom board I cannot use the gps ?

Hi,

The download you can find here, I do not believe there is a lot of documentation yet except for a readme in the zip file. Doing this you will be able to update to the latest modem FW, but this does not support GPS location. As described in this blog post, modem FW that supports GPS is scheduled for March 31st.

ok thanks, i was worried that my dk wasn't working correctly. Is there any documentation about the programming of the dk? I have installed the segger and I want to upload a code, I need the gps in particular

Hi,

The current modem FW does not have GPS support yet, this will be added in an upcoming release shortly. The DK therefore transmits a dummy location.
