I had the same error. Resetting the board didn't help, but starting the nrf programmer solved it. Does anybody know why?

Not sure. Just a tip from experience. It may be something to do with logging maybe. I have noticed similar things when opening up a Segger RTT log in Bluetooth Mesh for example. Sometimes I need to turn off the nRF52 DK before I open the RTT log.

Have you tried to press the reset button once the application starts & then press the AT+CFUN? again? This normally solves the issue. This video may also be helpful.
