We want to know about AoA /AoD applications for 52811, and there are some question as below.
1. Is there a difference between BT 5.1 and BT 5.0 from the perspective of HW? If so, what is the main difference?
2. For the existing BT 5.0 chip

RE: Questions about the AoA/AoD in 52811

Hi,

6. AoA = Angle of arrival, meaning receive. AoD = Angle or departure = Transmit. nRF52811 can implement both.

Best regards,

Thanks for quick response.

More questions.

6. What kind of AoA/AoD role can be implement in 52811? AoA Transmitter/Receiver? AoD Transmitter/Receiver?

Thank you.

BRs, Han

RE: Questions about the AoA/AoD in 52811

Hi Han,

1. The AoA/AoD feature of 5.1 requires different HW from 5.0, it is otherwise similar and on-air compatible. The difference is the ability to retrieve IQ data from the radio as specified in the BT 5.1 spec.

2. No, 52840/52832/52810 do not support retrival of the IQ data, required for AoA/AoD.

3. Yes.

4. Not possible to say at this moment, I would expect it to be about equally heavy.

5. The device that is to support AoA/AoD needs an antenna array, and an external RF switch to switch between the antennas. The radio has a built in mechanism to control the switch. We will be coming with algorithms and reference designs later this year. There will probably be some freedom when it comes to the antenna array design, obviously depending on how the algorithms turn out, but as I understand it the goal is that each designer will be able to calibrate the algorithms to their array and their product.

Best regards,
Andreas
