nRF9160 DK cannot find the cellular network

Hi,

I followed the "Get started" -> "Get your nRF9160 DK online" -> "Step 8"

www.nordicsemi.com/.../GetStarted

However, only the LED 3 is blinking all the time.

I guess the DK cannot find the cellular network in Croatia, Zagreb.

Croatia should support NB-IoT. Therefore I would like to connect to a NB-IoT network.

Please provide me with information how to do it. How to get access to the NB-IoT fw for the modem? Where can I find instructions how to instal new fw.?

  • To download the latest firmware, you can go here: https://www.nordicsemi.com/Products/Low-power-cellular-IoT/nRF9160/Download#infotabs and look for file mfwm1nrf916006830alpha.zip (has -'s and .'s in the description).  The instructions on how to flash are in a readme text file as well as the DFU tool in there. 

    The problem is the firmware that I just referenced is LTE-M and not NB-IoT.  They claim the NB-IoT stuff is due in about 4 weeks.  https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/b/nrf9160-development-status/posts/nrf9160-development-status Maybe if you bug the right people they can get you an early access alpha build of the NB-IoT firmware.  But at least you can download this LTE-M firmware and make sure you can flash firmware on your device, hopefully the right people will see this and help you with different firmware that will work in your area.

    thank you very much for the reply.

    I contacted my Regional Sales Manager. Now, I have firmware that should work for NB IoT: nrf9160_mdm_dfu-0.10.0+dev-py3-none-any.whl; 72B3D7C.ipc_dfu.signed.ihex; mfw-nb1_nrf9160_0.3.0-94.prealpha).

    I have T mobile’s sim card

    I flashed device. Log about it is in attachment (flash nrf91.rtf).

    Even I had rebooted device several times only LED3 is blinking.    

    As you can see in attachment print screen of Link Monitor there is a notice that modem is in off mode. I don't understand why?

    When does modem become green in LinkMonitor?

    From the provided log I see that you have updated without any issues.  However, there is a newer modem FW available (v0.7.0-29.alpha) that you should update to. Download it from here, under nRF9160 LTE-M/NB-IoT/GPS Modem Firmware. Be aware that this modem FW now supports both LTE-M and NB-IoT, and is controlled using the AT%SYSTEMMODE command. See the latest AT Command Reference Guide.

    I followed the "Get started" -> "Get your nRF9160 DK online" -> "Step 8"

     This Getting Started Guide is unfortunately outdated now. Using the same tool as referenced (nRF Connect for Desktop 2.6.2) please update the Getting Started Assistant to the latest version (v0.9.2), under Add/Remove Apps. In this guide, you will be able to download the latest version of the nRF Connect SDK (NCS) (git tag v0.4.0) which utilizes the latest modem FW.

    Secure Boot is now known as SPM (Secure Partition Manager). The asset tracker application has been moved from nrf\samples\nrf9160\ to nrf\applications\asset_tracker. Please read the latest NCS documentation here.
    Please be aware that when building the latest version of NCS, both SPM and the Asset Tracker will be combined into one merged.hex. Read more in this guide.

    I followed your instructions. The instructions are very clear and it all went without any issue.
    Unfortunately, it doesn't work. 

    As you can see in attachment print screen of Link Monitor there is a last notice

    LED3  is blinking all the time.

    Since it is a T-mobile's sim card and T-mobile's  network  support NB-IoT  I used the LTE LinkMonitor to send AT commands as you can see in logs.

    But as you can notice in screenshot LTE didn't become green. 

    The documentation reads : "LED 3 blinking: Connecting - The device is resolving DNS and connecting to the nRF Cloud".
    I have T-mobile's sim card and I suppose it couldn't resolve DNS and connect to the nRF Cloud?

    How can I check if I'm connected to the T-mobile's network?
