The terms "Smart" and "Smart ready" are no longer used - for several years now:

"Smart ready" meant support for both "classic" Bluetooth, and BLE.

All Nordic's chips are BLE-only -they have no "classic" support.

Yes, Bluetooth 5 still includes "classic" - but Nordic's products are still BLE only.

it should be fairly clear from the Nordic documentation that there is no classic support?

NRF5x cannot talk to Bluetooth Classic devices, as it only supports Bluetooth Low Energy modulation (and some non-BT ones).
