Here are some possible reasons for a timeout:

The LF Clock accuracy parameter is configure lower than the accuracy of the clock (link)
MIN_CONN_INTERVAL and MAX_CONN_INTERVAL is not configured correctly (link)
Pin is triggering restart (link)

Please check out these, and if the problem still persist please tell me, and I will look into it.

Ok, I figured it out.

I didn't get symbols for GDB because the default Makefile compiles sources with the flto option, which apparently also removed the symbols.

The app didn't start, because I had forgot to modify the board file to suit our board. In particular the low-frequency clock source was incorrect.
