 So I&amp;#39;ve been using the Verizon SIM card supplied by nordic with our nRF9160 dev kit. I never really new how the APN was getting configured because it just happened.

&lt;p&gt;Some vendors have a lot of requirements related to handling of APN and other PDN connection parameters than others. (&lt;span&gt;&lt;em&gt;In case of Verizon, the operator requires automatic handling of APNs in order to get the Verizon certification.&lt;/em&gt;)&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;These are indeed implemented and handled in the &lt;strong&gt;modem firmware.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So the modem firmware detects the specific vendors SIM and take action accordingly in the modem firmware to meet the requirements for that SIM card.&lt;/p&gt;
