"The buttons are active low, meaning the input will be connected to ground when the button is activated. The buttons have no external pull-up resistor, so to use the buttons the P0.13–P0.16 pins must be configured as an input with an internal pull-up resistor."

It says there that the button inputs need to be configured with pull ups.

Hey again Andy! RTFM I did, and I know the pins are connected to the leds and the leds to VDD instead of GND, so the functionality should be reversed, however the leds are simply not responding to the buttons input.

Am I using the wrong functions? or is it that the LEDs are connected through the IO expanders??
