If you're just starting, why would you start with such an old part?

It would be a lot simpler, and you'd get a lot better support, if you start up-to-date.

Note also that the nRF51 parts are not recommended for new BLE designs:

Probably the BLE Blinky example?

For nRF51, you would have to dig back to SDK v 12.3.0, IIRC.
