I am having this same issue. No matter what application I try to flash onto my DK, I get

Re-flashing the modem firmware to v1.0.0 does not help.

I think I can clearify. If you read Hung Bui's response you see that he mentions a "Fix image". This is a Modem Firmware image provided to fix the issues with the modem.

Step 1. is to flash this "fix image" onto the modem, just as you would do with a normal modem firmware update. This will fix the modem, but it's not a working modem firmware. That's why you have to perform "Step 3.".

Step 3. is to flash the v1.0.0 modem firmware again, so that the modem will be operational.

If you need the "fix image" inquire a Nordic Employee.

Hi,

Regarding the issue with the nRF9160 modem firmware. We have an early release version that you can use to recover the modem. Please be aware that this is an unofficial release and will not be supported (for FOTA) in the future so it should not be used in a production device.

Please follow the instruction and make sure you updated the nrfjprog to v10.3.0 or later.

1) Flash the fix image (please don't unzip the file, just select the .zip). The instruction is here.

2) Boot up

3) Flash back modem firmware v1.0.0

4) Reprogram certificates as instructed here.

I will send the fix image via PM to each of you. If anyone has the same problem, please leave a comment here or contact us.

Can you elaborate on the root cause of the issue? What is a work around in the meantime? We are not using NRF cloud for our deployment and are using our own aws certificates directly. Is this purely a certificate issue? We are in production for 1k units with 2k unit production starting in 2 weeks. We don't seem to see the issue with the alpha modem firmware.

A new modem FW update should fix this issue. Please speak to your respective Regional Sales Managers to get an update on when that will be released. Once the modem DFU is done, you will most likely need to get new certificates. You may get a 111 error. If you do, you can follow this link. Just remember to not delete your devices from nRF Cloud. If that link does not work, create a new private devzone ticket explaining the issue & please provide the IMEI code of the malfunctioning nRF91 device.

Has there been any movement, we are at a complete standstill until we can recover our existing boards. We have another order coming in but can't risk programming until we have a solution. Is there a process we can follow to be certain we do not see this issue?

The problem might be caused by the newest nrfjprog (10.2.1), since it is resetting twice. If the IC is reset while the modem FS is being updated, an FS corruption might happen.

However, we are not sure if this is the problem, and are trying to get to the bottom of it.

It seems to happen to devices after I've programmed them a few times. Is there a way to completely clear out all the flash and reprogram from scratch? Any way to save any of the boards we've gotten into this state?

The reset is due to an assert happening after the modem tries to read a file system in flash which is corrupted. We are currently trying to find out why flash is getting corrupted and how to get around this.
