&lt;p&gt;I assume that the &amp;quot;simple message model&amp;quot; that you refer to is the one that is mentioned in the thread &lt;a href="https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/f/nordic-q-a/29836/send-and-receive-a-string-via-access-layer"&gt;Send and receive a string via access layer&lt;/a&gt;. There is a link to an outdated version of it in the answer from &lt;a href="https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/members/bjorn-kvaale"&gt;Bjørn Kvaale&lt;/a&gt;, but I would not recommend relying too heavily on that one as it uses a very early version of the nRF5 SDK for Mesh.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Have you had a look at the &lt;a href="https://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.nordic.infocenter.meshsdk.v3.2.0%2Fmd_doc_libraries_how_to_models.html"&gt;Creating new models&lt;/a&gt; section of the nRF5 SDK for Mesh documentation, as well as the &lt;a href="https://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.nordic.infocenter.meshsdk.v3.2.0%2Fmd_models_vendor_simple_on_off_README.html"&gt;Simple OnOff model&lt;/a&gt; reference example for how to create a new model?&lt;/p&gt;
