I got a local SIM, not roaming, and finally got it to connect. Then I updated the asset_tracker application from git, and now it seems I cannot send AT commands anymore. I get getddadrinfo failed, probably because the APN is not set and I cannot set it because I cannot send AT commands. Any ideas how I can make it accept AT commands?

Is there a known good version of the asset tracker that works on the thingy and takes AT commands?

The two last values of the CEREG level 5 response is the ones related to PSM, Active-Time (the time after a transmit event when the device is reachable) and Periodic-TAU (the time between regular transmit events to keep the connection alive).

The meaning of the values can be found in 3GPP TS 24.008, section 10.5.7.4, but long story short, when they start with "111" the timers are not active, i.e. you do not have PSM activated.

RE: Getting started with the Thingy:91

Thank you Didrik for your reply.

Here is what I get for CEREG level 5

AT+CEREG?
+CEREG: 5,5,"8980","061B8B0B",7,,,"11100000","11100000"

If I understand correctly, the Hologram SIM card is also roaming? If so, I would expect the performance to be similar to the iBasis SIM card.

The +CPSMS command lets you set and read the requested timer values, and can therefore not be used to check whether those values got accepted.

If you do not get any log messages between the "Searching for satellites [...]" and "Stopping GPS. The device will try again [...]" to my knowledge that means that it has not entered PSM.

For how to check if you are in PSM, you might be able to use the +CEREG with response type 4 or 5, or the %XMONITOR. What we are interested in is the Active-Time and Periodic-TAU values. However, I am currently working on another case which reports some problems with the %XMONITOR command, that probably also includes the +CEREG command.

I will keep you informed about any progress I make.

I called the local network operator (Rogers) and it's impossible to get a support person that understands the problem. This is all very new to them, and they don't care enough to provide support to roaming customers.

I wonder if iBasis Tech Support has any insight into why PSM mode is not working on the Rogers network in Canada. Is it working anywhere in the world when roaming with an iBasis card?

Thanks,

Have you gotten a reply from the network operator?

If not, you can view the log from the Thingy in the Link Monitor (or another serial terminal). If it prints any satellite data (even just reports that it does not see any satellites), it has successfully entered PSM. If on the other side, it does not print anything before the timeout, and it prints a message saying that it tries again, it has not been able to enter PSM.

I understand the USB drivers and the LTE monitor are not working in Windows 7 so I tried in Windows 10. In windows 10, the drivers are working, the LTE monitor does see the thingy on the port, but the AT commands time out. Are the AT commands supposed to work with the original firmware or do I have to flash a different one?

Sadly I have not been able to confirm if this is the issue, but our people in Canada reports similar problems of not getting a GPS fix with iBasis SIM cards.

I would recommend that you contact your local operator, and ask for information from them.

How do I determine if PSM is allowed or not? I read in another post that the system will report that PSM is enabled, but actually it's not.

If PSM is not allowed, will the thingy not search for GPS, or it will search and not find the GPS?

This was my problem when i tried to use iBasis SIM in Norway ( not support PSM):

https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/nordic/nordic-blog/b/blog/posts/thingy-91-faq?CommentId=e30f51a5-eb61-4423-93b2-fb8b193946de

IN the report, it said: PSM enabled, after long_press to active the GPS ( purple leds on), nothing will come, and it will be reset after 360s (CONFIG_GPS_CONTROL_FIX_TRY_TIME=360)

Good luck

1. As Hoang said, you should try outside. The LED should also change to purple when it is searching for a GPS fix. Also, as he mentioned, PSM might not work with iBasis SIM cards. You need PSM to be able to do LTE and GPS concurrently. I have asked your Regional Sales Manager about the situation in Vancouver.

2. What operating system are you using? If you are using Windows 7, you should watch this case for more information:

Do you see the LEDs change color to purple? The purple color means GPS is searching. I must hold until you see the leds change to purple (after cyan)

I have spent many days to figure out the iBasis SIMs do NOT work with PSM in Norway :( . You should try with a local SIM card with LTE.
Is the LTE Link monitor supposed to work over USB? I connected it via USB but I get "No devices available". I did uncheck auto device port filter.
I dont know what is wrong. have you tried to use another app, for example: termite.
