Sorry. Didn't make it clear, did I.

Yes. adding the udev rules solved the problem.

The dongle was seen by the App. and advised that a bootloader firmware was available, so I accepted the option. The Red LED flashed for a while and the Green LED came on. There is now an "nRF5x" sub-window under the "Connection Map" Tap.

Don't know what to do next, but I guess there is some documentation somewhere when I start looking?
