A new version of the modem firmware has been released (v1.0.1), and you should update. You can find it at the bottom of the downloads here: https://www.nordicsemi.com/Software-and-Tools/Prototyping-platforms/Nordic-Thingy-91/Download#infotabs

1. Yes, that is the default firmware.

2. The cloud_connect error typically means that there is something wrong with the certificates needed to connect to the cloud. Take a look at this comment on how you can get new ones:

https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/f/nordic-q-a/49650/asset_tracker-does-not-work-with-firmware-v1-0-0/209761#209761

The comment above deprecates this comment, but it still has some useful information:
https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/f/nordic-q-a/49650/asset_tracker-does-not-work-with-firmware-v1-0-0/200311#200311

If you are not able to get it to work following those two comments you should open a private case where you provide the IMEI and PIN of the Thingy.

Best regards,

Didrik
