&lt;p&gt;When building an application for the nRF9160, you generally want it to run in the non-secure domain, as this is required to communicate with the modem.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;To build your application as non-secure, please use the nrf9160_pca10090&lt;strong&gt;ns&lt;/strong&gt; board (notice the &amp;quot;ns&amp;quot; at the end).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;When changing board name or configurations in prj.conf you should also check the &amp;quot;Clean Build Directory&amp;quot; box.&lt;/p&gt;
