I have a related question: can the nRF8001 be used to receive the broadcast beacon of another nRF8001 in another device?

No, the nRF8001 needs the arduino to control it. If you want a single chip beacon implementation you would have to look towards the nRF51 family.

But while we broadcast the information.. can i save the information in non volatile memory and then disconnect arduino so that it keeps transmitting the information.... without the arduino.

Yes, you can. You could have a look at the broadcast example in the nRF8001 Arduino SDK here.
