I never ended up trying your recommendation to attach an external debugger. But, I ran into the same problem again with my program on the Laird dongle which I purchased.

To fix the probem all I had to do was set "*p_erase_bonds = true" in my function that initializes my buttons and leds instead of "*p_erase_bonds = (startup_event == BSP_EVENT_CLEAR_BONDING_DATA)."

With that fix, both the nRF52840 Dongle and Laird Connectivity dongle work.

I haven't tried attaching a debugger yet just because I received a BL654 dongle from Laird Connectivity and it was plug in play after programming it. If I ever go back to the dongle I will follow your instructions.

I recommend to attach a debugger as described in 'Using an external debugger' chapter in the nRF52840 Dongle Programming Tutorial. Make sure to read 'A word of caution before you begin'.

Since you have an nRF52840-DK you can use that to program and debug the nRF52840-Dongle as described here:
