I think the tutorial was written for SDK 15.x.x but I think it should work with SDK 16.x.x as well. If it works then you should use that, since it is the newest and most up to date SDK.

Firmware for the dongle can be found in SDK 16.0.0, simply pick a project in the folder nRF5_SDK_16.0.0\examples, and choose the pca10056 folder (For the nRF52840 DK).

Here is a tutorial that shows how to program the Dongle and how to adapt an nRF52840 DK example for the nRF52840 Dongle.
