The transmitter needs to be able to send a CTE packet, the nRF52840 can't do that. So you will need to use a 833 or 811 on either side of the link.

I am also interested in this. I already own a nRF52840DK and would like to start experimenting with direction finding with nRF52833DK. I was hoping the requirement for direction finding in AoA would be only to the receiver since if I am not mistaken, sending CTE does not require anything special in the hardware side. Too bad if there is no way of using direction finding features with a 5.0 device sender and 5.1 with three antennas as a receiver, this would have opened a world of possibilities with such a large base of 5.0 devices around :/

It doesn't matter, only the nRF52811 and the nRF52833 can send or receive CTE. Not sure why you want to do this, there's no angle information if you have only one antenna.

Only the nRF52811 and nRF52833 supports CTE (and direction finding), not the nRF52840
