There are some good resources listed in the opening post of the thread Add buttonless dfu to my own application. Especially link number 3, which has a walk-through of the required modifications to an existing project in order to add buttonless DFU (at around halfway through the guide).

I would like to add buttonless DFU to the HRM example. what would be the best way to achieve this?

Hi,

We do have Getting started with Nordic's Secure DFU bootloader, a step by step guide.

The DFU bootloader is separate from the application, and adding a DFU bootloader can be very easy depending on your requirements for how to enter DFU mode. "Pressing a button while resetting the device" enters DFU mode by default, in which case flashing the bootloader (and a bootloader settings page) is enough for DFU functionality. Another option, which requires adding a BLE service to the application itself, is what we call "buttonless DFU". With buttonless DFU you can trigger DFU mode from a connected BLE device.
