You can now upgrade the modem firmware from one minor release to the next over serial DFU using the Programmer app.

Didrik Rokhaug I just saw a software release email for nRF Connect for Desktop v3.3.1 which mentions ""full Modem firmware update (without a programmer)". Does that mean it can now handle upgrades from mfw1.0.0 to mfw1.1.0, or was the word "full" a bit misleading in that email?

No, the modem firmware supports both NB-IoT and LTE-M.

However, it only supports one at the time. You can select which one is supported with the %XSYSTEMMODE AT command.

As you are on mfw v1.0.1, you will not be able to upgrade to v1.1.0 without external hardware. But, you will be able to upgrade to future 1.0.x versions.

Ah ok. Thanks! I'm trying to get a NB-IoT card to work on it now, but it does not. The modem firmware is mfw_nrf9160_1.0.1. I have not read too much about this yet, but it looks like the modem firmware is split between NB-IoT and LTE-M. Does this mean I need to update the modem firmware to get nb-iot to work? If so, I need DigiKey to send me the DK, hehe. :-)

Hi.

You can update the modem via nRF Cloud.

However, the Thingy:91 does only support modem DFU within the same minor version. You can, therefore, not update from mfw1.0.0 to v1.1.0.

For this, you will need an external programmer, such as the one found on the DK.
