I would strongly recommend that you setup the toolchain and compile any samples that you need manually.

If you get stuck somewhere, just ask us in the forum.

Could you elaborate on where you're stuck in the toolchain setup?

Note that if you want to flash the serial_lte_modem using the thingy:91 bootloader, you'll have to add these to the prj.conf file (so that it generates the app image for mcuboot):

# MCUBOOT
CONFIG_BOOTLOADER_MCUBOOT=y
CONFIG_IMG_MANAGER=y
CONFIG_MCUBOOT_IMG_MANAGER=y

# Flash
CONFIG_FLASH=y
CONFIG_IMG_ERASE_PROGRESSIVELY=y

Then take the app_signed.hex and use nrf programmer to flash it.

Hi Tommy,

There's a precompiled firmware .zip available for download here:

The readme.txt shows what .hex maps to which feature, and .zip contains images for the bootloader or a debugger to flash it directly.

I finnaly got the Micropython firmware working. I had to disable flow control on the uart.

I want to do a smal test for the asset tracker app. Is there a ready made .hex file to download? I'm stuggling to setup my toolchain.

Yes. You'll need a cable to connect from the "DEBUG OUT" port of the nRF9160-DK to the thingy:91, similar to this:

Unfortunately, Thingy:91 does not have a on-board debugger, so you must use an external Cortex M33 capable debugger in order to flash the nRF directly.

The nRF9160 DK has a on-board debugger, and is recommended if you want to do development and prototyping.

I'm not planning to use other than Micropython anyway. Just want that installed, but don't know how. I see that the other guy on the link you sent me made it, so i guess i can to. Thingy:91 does not have a dedicated debugger, so it uses a bootloader (mcuboot) to update the application. If you have a nRF91-DK (or a Cortex M33 capable JLink SWD debugger) you can use that as a debugger to program the device.

The image must be signed for mcuboot to accept it, as described here: https://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/topic/ug_thingy91/UG/thingy91/firmware_update/updating_appn_fw_9160_mcu.html?cp=12_0_4_1_0_0

If you're updating the asset_tracker, it will be located here:

..\ncs\nrf\applications\asset_tracker\<my build folder>\zephyr\app_signed.hex.

Programmer shall then allow you to press write:

I have version v.3.3.0. But the Upgrade choices under "Device" is greyed out and cannot be clicked. Se picture. Is there something special i need to do with the Thingy:91 to put it in programming / Upgrade mode ?

No, you do not need an external mcu. nRF9160 is a SoC, so you can run everything on the nRF9160.
