I have a question about chip operation temperature. Will the chip auto reset when the temperature over 75 C? I checked the nRF51822 product specification v3.1 found that the max operation temperature is 75C, but it didn't indicate what will

RE: chip reset on high temperature

Stefan,

I am trying to evaluate the nRF51822 for an automotive (in-cabin) application. Some IC manufacturers define automotive temperature range at -40 to 125C. Although on closer inspection this temperature spec is the junction temperature of the IC. How does the nRF51822 weigh-in? Do you recommend or have success using this device for automotive applications for in-cabin products?

RE: chip reset on high temperature

You are welcome.
The nRF51822 PS v3.1 document says:

Operating temperature: -25 to +75 °C (Operating conditions, chapter 7)

Storage temperature: -40 to +125 °C (Aboslute maximum ratings, chapter 6)

The storage temperature specification is the tolerant temperature of the chip, so exposing the chip to +125°C should be fine, but do not expose the chip to higher temperatures than +125°C. If you plan to operate the chip at this temperature various things will be outside specification, current consumption and other, and the radio will most likely not work, and other peripherals might not work either. The chip should however not be damaged as long as you do not expose it to temperatures outside the storage temperature range. The chip should operate normally after the temperature goes below 75°C and you are within the operating temperature range.

Operating voltage for the nRF51822 is 1.8V to 3.6V for the whole temperature range.

If the chip resets when going outside the operating temperature range, that must be considered as normal, as operation behavior is not specified outside the operating temperature range.
