No, the only way to update/program the DFU bootloader is by programming it via USB DFU as described in the Revert to production bootloader in the Dongle Programming tutorial.

Simon, I have followed the Dongle programming tutorial with no luck. I was able to have a unit with SWD headers shipped to me, and can program over via jlink now. Are there directions on flashing the most recent DFU bootloader with a precompiled binary/hex image?

Have you checked out our Dongle programming tutorial which explains how to modify examples to be programmable onto the nRF52840 Dongle? Please give it a look and see if you have missed something that is mentioned there.
