&lt;p&gt;This should not be a problem, but you will have to stop advertising in order to change the PHY from Coded_PHY to 1MBPS_PHY when going from long-range to BLE v.4.x and back.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;You can check out our &lt;a href="https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/nordic/nordic-blog/b/blog/posts/testing-long-range-coded-phy-with-nordic-solution-it-simply-works-922075585"&gt;long-range just works blog post&lt;/a&gt;, where this is done by pressing buttons on the DK, but you should be able to set a timer to take care of the switch. You can use the source code from the blog as a reference.&lt;/p&gt;
