The Segger software does not work behind a proxy server.
After installing and licensing it (by moving the machine outside our corporate firewall) we try to start it inside.
It just fails with a message box "No commercial-use license found

RE: The Segger embedded studio does not work behind a proxy server

You don't - you just verify the answer (or answers) which resolved the issue:
1. Are there any restrictions on developing in the "Non commercial" mode?
There are no practical consequences, other than the dialog box popping up every time you start Segger Embedded Studio. I cannot see that there is a legal issue either, since you have a valid (free) license, and the technical difficulties with license validation do not change that fact. So I suggest you just work in non-commercial mode when inside the company network. You could perhaps also get the IT department in your company to make some adjustments to the proxy server configuration.
2.1. Are there any plans from Segger to fix this?
Please ask segger about that. You can contact them on this page.
2.2 The license appears to be tied to the MAC-address, a great hassle since we use virtual machine for development, and they need to be moved around and started on whatever physical machine has the boards connected. Is there any way to handle this
I do not have any knowledge about that, but Segger should be able to answer this as well.
3. Do you have any automation, plugins or instructions to setup freeware for easy development, i.e Eclipse or Visual Studio Code instead of Segger?
We do not have any up to date guides on either Eclipse nor Visual Studio Code. There are unofficial guides made by customers out there, for instance, VSC-Nordic-example. I cannot say how well it works, though. Also, I really recomend using Segger Embedded Studio unless you have a good reason for not doing so, and in this case, I would hope that Segger can suggest workarounds that will make SES work for you.

RE: The Segger embedded studio does not work behind a proxy server
Are there any plans from Segger to fix this?
You would have to ask Segger that:

https://forum.segger.com/index.php/Board/9-SEGGER-Embedded-Studio-related
