The Toolchain Manager efficient for setting up the system. It seems like support for macOS recently has been added. If you have not installed it already, you may check out these instructions:

If this folder is not present, it is likely that other important files are missing as well. Have you tried the Getting Started Assistant? Going through this is quite useful for making sure everything is set up correctly.

(The Getting Started Assistant is currently not supporting NCS v1.2.0 and later. If you don't need the latest functionality from NCS v1.2.0, it should be fine to use NCS v1.1.0. However, if NCS v1.2.0 is required for your project, it should be possible to use the Getting Started Assistant as a guidance for the setup.)

Yes. As the nrf9160_pca10090 folder was not present in the distribution I will need to add the folder and then (presumably) add the correct contents (similar to those you mention).

Selecting the folder should hopefully be sufficient. Here is an example of what it may look like:

The nrf9160_pca10090 folder should already be containing the necessary files. Here are the files I found in the folder on my own computer.

Please try adding rf9160_pca10090 to the Board Directory. It will look something like this:

~/src/ncs/zephyr/boards/arm/nrf9160_pca10090

Please let me know if you are still not able to select your board.
