I tried the same for nRF5340 DK (not pdk). I am unable to build the smp_svr application.

my prj.conf file looks like this

My team is also trying to implement a Zephyr based project running in nRF5340, and all the attempts to implement FOTA have hit a wall. We've seen conflicting suggestions and ideas, but in the end has anyone actually succeeded having over-the-air update of the FW (for both the network and the application cores) in the 5340? Maybe should I open a new thread? Thanks!

A new app, that allows you to perform DFU using the SMP protocol is just released. Test it out, and see if it solves your problems:

I got some news regarding FOTA on nRF5340. There is an issue in Zephyr with MTU negotiations on nRF5340: https://github.com/zephyrproject-rtos/zephyr/issues/25652

This issue is being fixed in https://github.com/zephyrproject-rtos/zephyr/pull/26447, but you may fix it by setting:

CONFIG_BT_L2CAP_TX_MTU=252
CONFIG_BT_L2CAP_RX_MTU=252
CONFIG_BT_RX_BUF_LEN=260

in your Kconfig. Could you give it a spin?

Hello,

As Simon mentioned, MCU mgr update is supported by nRF Connect for both Android and iOS, and nRF Toolbox for iOS (only at the moment). We are also launching dedicated app called nRF Connect Device Manager on Play Store and App Store very soon (the one you got APKs for).

We are aware of a but in nRF Connect for Android on the validating phase. It will be addressed in the next release. A bug for this has been reported on GitHub: https://github.com/NordicSemiconductor/Android-nRF-Connect/issues/130

The Device Manager should work the same way for nrf52840 and nrf5340. It's the same protocol. It give it a soon on Monday or Tuesday and come back to you.

Unfortunately, we have solved nothing! I even didn't care too much about "Error 8 (0x8): GATT CONN TIMEOUT" in nRF Connect for Mobile, since we don't develop a mobile app for this purpose right now, and we are writing firmware. OTA DFU (FOTA upgrade over Bluetooth) for nRF5340 doesn't work till now! It works for nRF52840 DK, as I mentioned before, but not for nRF5340 PDK.

It seems like you solved your issues by using the other app. Hence I didn't do any more investigation on this.

It will soon be released a new app dedicated to mcumgr, called nRF Connect Device Manager (see this ticket), and hopefully, everything will run smoothly then.

Lukáš, thank you very much! You saved my time. I tried these apps. Both of them worked fine for me. But an official one also worked, despite the error "Error 8 (0x8): GATT CONN TIMEOUT" in logs. It showed this error, but new firmware was uploaded anyway. In the case of your apps I didn't see verbose logs, so I couldn't get whether it had such trouble or not, but they uploaded firmware properly. Thanks for pointing to me these two other tools for working with FOTA.

Thank you, Lukáš! Is it an Android library or an application, which implements about the same functionality as nRF Connect for Mobile? Unfortunately, I couldn't find a way how to easily run it on my mobile, there's no ".apk" file. Should I download Android Studio and build this app myself to try? Sorry for a foolish question, but I didn't catch an idea of how to try your suggestion.

Basically I followed this guide developer.nordicsemi.com/.../ug_nrf5340.html

Firstly, according to "SMP Server Sample" (developer.nordicsemi.com/.../README.html I connected nRF52840 DK through USB, opened serial terminal "minicom -b 115200 -8 -D /dev/ttyACM0" and built and flashed MCUboot, using the following commands:

Secondly, I located "/ncs/zephyr/samples/subsys/mgmt/mcumgr/smp_svr" example, added the line "CONFIG_MCUMGR_SMP_BT=y" to "prj.conf", open nRF Connect SDK Project from SEGGER Embeded Studio for ARM (see a screenshot below). And finally, I built and run the project: Build -> Build and Run.

UART output after it:

Thirdly, I modified the example "SMP Server Sample" and merged a blinky example ("/ncs/zephyr/samples/basic/blinky") to clearly show the difference after upgrading new firmware. I built it and uploaded it to a mobile phone.
And finally, I launched "nRF Connect for Mobile" app (Version 4.24.1) on the mobile phone, scanned, connected to my device with name "Zephyr", taped DFU, located new app_update.bin file and chose "Test and Confirm". After upgrading the firmware I could see a blinking led on the board.

I would suggest that you also try Device Manager instead of nRF Connect Mobile. Not sure if will solve the situation though.

I was not able to upload a sample to neither the nRF52840 nor the nRF5340, and I guess there is something wrong with the nRF Connect mobile app. The developer(s) responsible for that app are currently on vacation, so I'm not sure what's causing this.

However, you said you were able to make it work using the nRF5280 DK, could you provide me in details all the steps for that. Such that I have a reference to look at when investigating the issues with the nRF5340 DK.

Okay, I am really sorry for the confusion. My bad. I was not aware that nRF Connect for Mobile supported the mcumgr SMP/Bluetooth Protocol.

I read your previous answer more thoroughly and saw that you were indeed able to perform a DFU with NCS, nRF52840, and the nRF C. app.

I just took a look at the features of the app as well, and it said the following: "Supports McuMgr,profile that lets the user control and update Zephyr-based devices".

So I will now investigate the issue regarding nRF5340, and why it doesn't work with that device specifically.

Simon, hello again!

I used nRF Connect SDK when I built and run a provided example and not nRF5 SDK. This is example github.com/.../smp_svr. So, it means that NCS supports OTA DFU properly and a problem is not that nRF5340 supports only NCS and not nRF5 SDK, the problem is that the example doesn't work in the case of specifically nRF5340. It seems that I didn't understand why you mentioned nRF5 SDK.

I am interested in FOTA (OTA DFU) upgrade using a mobile phone. I used nRF Connect for Mobile and I also tried to use nRF Toolbox on an Android mobile phone.

In the case of nRF52840 DK I was successful to launch an example from developer.nordicsemi.com/.../README.html using a guide developer.nordicsemi.com/.../ug_nrf52.html. And I upgraded the firmware of nRF52840 using nRF Connect for Mobile over Bluetooth. But when I did about the same steps with nRF5340 DK, then it didn't work. So, I would like to clarify the differences in FOTA upgrade between these two boards, using smp_svr example or any other examples of FOTA over Bluetooth.

In general, my goal is to launch a firmware, which realizes Over-the-Air Device Firmware Update on nRF5340 PDK, and upgrade it using a mobile phone (Android for now) over Bluetooth to new firmware. Unfortunately, I haven't found any working guides and examples of OTA DFU for nRF5340 yet.

How would you like to perform the DFU on the nRF5340? From a computer? From a mobile phone? From another microcontroller?

If you want to update it from a computer, BLE is only supported on MacOS and Linux at the moment, but the serial protocol is supported on all OS's to my understanding. Please tell me if I should explain one of these approaches in more detail.

If you want to update it from a mobile phone or another device, I can help you with that as well. But I'm not aware of any out-of-the-box solutions for this. But you could implement it by writing the software yourself since the protocols are described here: SMP/Bluetooth or SMP/Console. However, there may be some out-of-the-box solutions out there, please tell me if I should look into this.
