I actually didn't know you could flash the 52840 dongles with the -f argument now. Before it only worked with devkits that had the OB Jlink. I will try to replicate this here and report the problem internally. Thanks for letting us know.

I think it might be due to the dongle changing ports everytime it restarts. It works with nrfConnect for desktop and changes from /devttyACM0 to other ports when connectivity firmware is flashed. I installed Windows on the machine and it does the same thing with COM ports.

Once I omit the -f argument on nrfutil on a succesfully flashed device, it works and is successfully doing DFU OTA. Getting MTU exchange request errors sometimes although its no big deal to loop the nrfutil command.

I have not seen this issue with my setup which too runs Ubuntu 20.04. To test the USB connectivity, maybe you can try to see if the dongle works with the BLE app in nRF connect for desktop: https://www.nordicsemi.com/Software-and-tools/Development-Tools/nRF-Connect-for-desktop
