Your phone connected to to the H7 belt because you had already previously "paired" (and potentially "bonded") the H7 belt with your phone. This means that any app that runs on YOUR phone can connect YOUR belt. Once the H7 belt is "bonded" to your phone, it will not allow other phones to connect to it, without first unpairing/unbonding. Please read more about "pairing" and "bonding" and it will make more sense.

In this case you could modify the application to perform some RSSI filtering in order to avoid far-away devices attempting to connect to the device.

The "allways-on" behavior of the Polar belt makes sense from a user perspective :)

Thanks. I am have a Polar H7 belt, and the example app connected to it without me doing anything at all to it (aside from putting it on). I shall investigate further.

Typically you would have to interact with both devices in some way for them to be actively looking for a peer device. For instance the heart rate monitor would only look for a heart rate belt while a button is being pressed, and the heart rate belt would only appear as connectable when a button is being pressed.

Using encryption/pairing would also ensure that it is not possible for a master device to "hijack" the slave device without providing some secret information.
