&lt;p&gt;That is correct. The nRF52840 Dongle (PCA10059) does not support the nRF Sniffer for BLE firmware. &lt;a href="https://www.nordicsemi.com/Software-and-tools/Development-Tools/nRF-Sniffer-for-Bluetooth-LE"&gt;As stated on the product page&lt;/a&gt;: To use the nRF Sniffer for Bluetooth LE you need either the nRF52840 DK (PCA10056), nRF52 DK, nRF51 DK, or the nRF51 Dongle.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;You can use the nRF52840 Dongle as a &lt;a href="https://www.nordicsemi.com/Software-and-tools/Development-Tools/nRF-Sniffer-for-802154"&gt;sniffer for 802.15.4 protocols&lt;/a&gt;, like Thread and Zigbee for instance, but not for BLE.&lt;/p&gt;
