Again, 2.4GHz is not a great choice for really long range - due to physics.

But one of the key features of a mesh is that it allows you to make many smaller "hops" to reach a distant point ...

I'm planing on using nrf52840 for this solution. And have now dropped the BLE mesh library and looking into building a mesh network using openThread. Not sure yet about the range.

So what protocol did you have in mind?

Again, to use Nordic's code you have to use Nordic's chips - so it'll have to be a protocol supported by Nordic.

I'm not sure that anything at 2.4GHz (licence-free) is really going to be suited to such a long range?

Some other protocol using 2.4 GHz, i dont think BLE can handle that range? Max 8 km between nodes is correct.

What i would like to accomplish is a Mesh communication with a distance range between 0,1 to 8 km. And on top of Mesh i would aslo like to implement MQTT-SN.

Nordic's licence terms only allow you to use their software on their chips
