I'm starting a new project using an nRF52840 that interfaces with a Quectel BG95 modem with AT commands. Ultimately, I need to use MQTT to an Azure cloud environment.
I would like to know which approach is recommended.

Which Azure IoT hub sample are you referring to?

Have you considered using the nRF9160 instead? We have a sample for Azure IoT Hub in nRF Connect SDK: https://github.com/nrfconnect/sdk-nrf/tree/master/samples/nrf9160/azure_iot_hub

In that case you could use the nRF52 as a external connectivity chip for BLE using HCI UART: https://github.com/nrfconnect/sdk-zephyr/tree/master/samples/bluetooth/hci_uart

See also the LTE Sensor Gateway for an example of how to transmit data from the Thingy nRF52 to the nRFCloud via the nRF9160 and BLE HCI UART: https://github.com/nrfconnect/sdk-nrf/tree/master/samples/nrf9160/lte_ble_gateway#id3

The Azure IoT hub sample could in theory also be ported to the nR52840 device if you still want to use an external modem, but you will need to create your own modem driver for the BG95. If would be nice if you create a PR if you choose to go that route so other people can use it as well, and perhaps you can get some help from other developers when implementing.

Best regards,

Marjeris
