Hi Andrea,
When flashing the Thingy:91 via the Debug port you need to use the one of the .hex files in the "images_full" folder.
So when using the Debug port with the nrf9160DK please select the correct file.
e.g. you can use this file: devzone.nordicsemi.com/.../8055.asset_5F00_tracker_5F00_thingy_5F00_nb.hex
(The files in "images_dfu_hex" should only be used when you only have the thigny:91 connected and it is in serial recovery mode).

I received my NRF9160 DK and immediately flashed the modem and application to the Thingy:91.
Based on the messages and log (see below) everything seems to have worked fine, but after the flashing the Thingy still looks like not switching on or doing anything.

Once again, even when trying to go to DFU mode, the Thingy is not showing in the device list. In fact it appears to be completely dead and its COM port is never listed.

The only "sign of life" I get is when reading the files through the Programmer app, I can see both the Thingy and the NRF9160 DK applications by alternatley switching on and off the Thingy. Beside that it's completely useless.

I'm really starting to think that something (bad!) has happened to my Thingy. Would you have other suggestions?

Hi Andrea,

I totally understand the frustration.
The chance that the Thingy:91 is bricked by this is close to non-existent.
The unfortunate thing that has happened here is that the bootloader has been overwritten or made invalid. We are aware of this issue and working on a fix so that this will not happen in the future. (It seems that in some cases this can happen)

Unfortunately, the only option I can see now is to recover the device is to use an external debugger, or the cheaper option use a nRF91DK to reflash the Thingy:91 with a valid bootloader and application.

In any regards if you plan to develop on the nRF9160 a nrf91Development Kit gives you a lot of flexibility and you can quickly debug your application since it has an on board programmer/debugger. (which you can use to debug/program the Thingy:91 as well which really makes thing easier on your part when using it as a prototype platform).

no, it doesn't show up at all. Not anymore. Before upgrading the firmware and loading the application it did use to appear, of course.

I don't have a debugger and was hoping not to need a nRF9160DK.
Is there any chance that my Thingy is completely "broken"? Because in that case it would be more convenient to buy a new one, rather than buying the more expensive DK! Also, the Thingy should have a warranty...

Hi Andrea,
Does it at all show up in "Device Manager" in when you connect the Thingy:91 and just turning it ON?

Do you have an external debugger or an nRF9160DK + a 10-pin connector to maybe flash the device via that?

Hi Martin,

I had a big success, but an even bigger failure! :-(

I installed the nrfjprog v. 10.10.0 (64bit), this time I also installed the J-Link apps, then tried everything again and in fact I had no "Error while probing devices" and I then could upgrade the modem firmware (to v. 1.2.1)! OK.

I just noticed that after upgrading the modem firmware, the LEDs were not blinking (blue) anymore, maybe it's normal, I don't know.

Then I went to DFU mode with SW4 and loaded the thingy91_nbiot_dfu_2020-09-23_b6ad40d0.hex application file. Apparently all was successful. OK

The big issue now is that LEDs are always off, and even when trying to go to DFU mode, the Thingy is not showing in the device list. In fact it appears to be completely dead and its COM port is never listed.

I rebooted the PC, turned off-on the Thingy, tried DFU mode several times, but nothing happens at all!

What can I do now??

Could you please try to update the nrfjprog version to 10.10.0?

I am now using Windows10 Pro v.1903.
The Thingy:91 version on the sticker is 1.4.0
I have now tried v1.1.2 (mfw_nrf9160_1.1.2.zip) and v.1.1.3 (mfw_nrf9160_1.1.3.zip), with same results, here is the output log:

I open the programmer, put Thingy in DFU mode (keep SW3 pressed while turning on), select the PCA20035 device, then select the modem firmware file and then I get the last 3 messages you see in the log.

Anything else I could try..?

Hi Andrea,
Could you share the full output log from the programmer app when this happens?

Which operating system are you using?
Which version of the Thingy:91 do you have (should be mentioned on the sticker)?
What exactly are you trying to flash? (make sure it is the correct file)
Could you try to update the modem with the v1.1.2 file and then see if it also works with v1.1.3?

The cheapest solution for an external debugger is maybe to get an nRF91DK, there you can use the debug-out port connected to a simple 10-pin connector as such:
