Hi,

I would still suggest you duplicate the project to a separate folder from the nrf5 sdk folder and then edit the path for source files and header files. You might be interested in this similar post. To be quite honest, I will always base my new projects on existing example projects.

Duplicating it works but what about if I want to create a new project using the example code in a completely separate folder from the nrf5 sdk folder, what are the steps I need to do in order to use the example code and add only the necessary files to the project?

You can remove the unnecessary program from the duplicated project as you want.

Yes, thank you. That works but now, how do I create a separate program for that blinky program only without the other unnecessary programs?

No, duplicate the example project and modify the code as you want.
