Have you checked out our BLE characteristics tutorial, which explains step by step how to add characteristics and define/configure custom characteristics as you want them in your application.

Hi. I am currently using the nRF Connect mobile app.

The board is used as a peripheral. Currently, I am using the BLE Heart rate service example and modified to add a characteristic to heart rate service. It is able to write data to the nRF52840 DK. How do I change the name of the characteristic which is named as "Unknown Characteristic"?

What heart rate service app is this exactly? Are you using a phone and the nRF Toolbox or nRFConnect apps for example? Will the nRF52840 board be used as a central or peripheral in this usecase? I would suggest checking out our BLE Heart Rate Service examples available in our SDK. Please check out this link for a central example project, and this link for a peripheral example.
