&lt;p&gt;In general, you would have to use an external flash that has an&lt;a href="https://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/topic/ps_nrf52840/qspi.html?cp=4_0_0_5_18_7#instruction_set"&gt; instruction set that complies with the on-chip QSPI peripheral&lt;/a&gt;. The QSPI peripheral commands are implemented in hardware, however we do have what we call&amp;nbsp;&lt;a href="https://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/topic/ps_nrf52840/qspi.html?cp=4_0_0_5_18_5#custom_instructions"&gt;custom commands&lt;/a&gt;.
