Have a look at the connection in this thread.
I'm connecting the device via USB, so I'm not familiar with how to check the voltage to the SDK?
Open J-Link Commander, and check the VTref as the figure I replied in the previous.

thanks for taking the time to respond so far,

Wiring now is as followed:

So I'm currently not using the debug output to connect with the device

I've provided power to the custom device by batteries now, no change in the result.

I'm connecting the device via USB, so I'm not familiar with how to check the voltage to the SDK?

log via commandline command:
nrfjprog.exe -f NRF52 --recover --log:
devzone.nordicsemi.com/.../0250.log.log

RE: How to erase a protected firmware program (knowing the protected password)

Hi James,
I can put batteries to the unit if that would be better?
No, just give power by J2.

Here is the https://www.nordicsemi.com/Software-and-tools/Development-Tools/nRF-Command-Line-Tools.

How do you connect your hardware device with nRF52DK? Could you provide the picture? Do you use DK's Debug output to connect with your custom device? Please also provide the power to the custom device separately.

What voltage of VTref does the J-Link Commander get? Please check by the J-Link Commander and make sure it detects VTref as 3.3v.

What is your command-line tool version? You can check by typing
nrfjprog -v
, and provide the log.
