Thank you. I was not programming the example using the correct board, I was using the nrf52840 board. Changing it to the correct board allowed me to program the example properly.

Okay, have you done the following:

Set SW5 to nRF52
Program the example using the board nrf9160dk_nrf52840

From my understanding the nRF9160DK comes with the nRF52480 on board. I am trying to run this example on the nRF52480 on the nRF9160DK.

You can not run BLE examples on the nRF9160 DK, because the nRF9160 does not support BLE. However, you can run the BLE host part on the nRF9160 and the BLE controller on a chip that supports BLE, e.g. the nRF52840.
