In order to read a particular address, you need to first write the register address to the device, then you perform a read which will give you the value stored at the register address. What you are doing now, is just to run the &lt;a href="https://github.com/nrfconnect/sdk-zephyr/blob/v2.4.99-ncs2/include/drivers/i2c.h#L434-L444"&gt;i2c read command&lt;/a&gt;, and the&amp;nbsp;&lt;span&gt;MLX90614 has no idea what register value to return, since you haven&amp;#39;t written it to the sensor.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I don&amp;#39;t have an&amp;nbsp;&lt;span&gt;MLX90614 at the moment, but I tested with a&amp;nbsp;MAX44009 GY-49, and was able to read a register using the &lt;a href="https://github.com/nrfconnect/sdk-zephyr/blob/v2.4.99-ncs2/include/drivers/i2c.h#L245-L257"&gt;i2c_transfer() command&lt;/a&gt; instead. &lt;p&gt;It seems like you are &lt;a href="https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/f/nordic-q-a/74825/i-need-help-for-nrf5340-with-i2c"&gt;creating the driver&lt;/a&gt; yourself. I would recommend you to start with the &lt;a href="https://github.com/crfosse/ncs_projects/blob/1ee5b61cad1cab69b5e48925ac195aea43495f91/peripheral/i2c/src/main.c"&gt;i2c_scanner example&lt;/a&gt;, and just see if you can communicate with the sensor. Then you can gradually, step-by-step, build on the example. Write to a register, read a register, read sensor values. Study the &lt;a href="https://www.sanatbazar.com/components/com_jshopping/files/demo_products/sensirion_SHT20.pdf"&gt;datasheet of the SHT20 closely&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Do you have a logic analyzer? That&amp;#39;s a very useful tool that allows you to see what&amp;#39;s actually being sent.&lt;/p&gt;
