I am testing the nRF9160 DK and used the asset tracker application with the IBasis SIM.
I figured it out how to redirected the logging and Zephyr console to the RTT backend.
The AT command handler is still on the first COM port, which is also the modem trace port.

I did capture 2 traces (+ application log of failing scenario in NBIOT), one working with CATM, the other one failing the MQTT connect in NBIOT (the modem is registered to NBIOT though). Find the files attached.

The trace files (RAW format) are relatively small, so I am not sure if I did everything correctly. Please advise if something is wrong.

Please let me know if the modem team does find something interesting in the logs (use the CAT M trace to cross compare if you like to).

Thanks and best regards,
Kevin

Sorry, I didn't get to that earlier, but I have just looked at what things I need to do. Currently, everything is prepared for the modem tracing, I am using the asset tracker v1.

However, it seems modem traces are on the first COM port, same as my application log. On the nRF9160 DK, this seems to be UART1 (within Zephyr called UART0?), nRF91 UART2 (within Zephyr called UART1) is disabled on the DK (DTS file states: /* Disable UART1, because it is used by default in TF-M */).

It seems as if I need to flip more than just one switch.
What is the recommended setup, naturally I want to keep my application UART console?

ADDING: Does it not cause issues if the modem trace + application logs & AT command interface are on the same COM port?

My apologies for the delayed answer. It took me some time double-checking this internally.

TCP is not always supported in NB-IoT networks, and that is generally a known issue in some networks in Germany.

But we might need modem traces here to find the root cause of the issue, as we are not sure what the root cause could be.

I don’t know if this is something you wanna try, but you can follow this guide to do so.

I had my DK running outdoors. However, the XMONITOR and CESQ AT commands usually report fairly good cellular signal parameters, also indoors, thus I thought the cellular coverage is actually not too bad and not the root cause of the issue.

I don't know if there are any tiimeouts for the MQTT connection / cloud connection that I could increase just to see if it works most consistently. Could be the backend of the MNO/MVNO that causes the delays here, resulting in connection issues on TCP, MQTT or another higher layer.

Regarding the actual coverage and as I mentioned previously, iBasis seems to only/or mainly roam on Telefonica/o2 Germany. For those interested, this is the best / latest coverage map of Telefonica Germany that I found:
https://www.o2online.de/netz/

Please let me know if you find out anything further, otherwise feel free to close the case.

BR
Kevin

RE: nRF9160 DK - Asset Tracker Application - Connect to EMEA nRF Cloud?

Hello Kevin,

Thanks a lot for the logs! The device in Berlin reports a connection reset error, while the device in Munich claims that the host could not be found with the available network interfaces (which might be the same root cause, only in different words).

Considering the national iBasis coverage of NB-IoT in Germany, I’m not really sure how much support we can provide here.

But I’ll check this with our nRF Cloud team and see if they have any solution to your problem.

Regards,

I am attaching two application logs, one taken in Berlin, the other one in Munich. Let me know if you see something interesting. For those 2 logs, I have used the pre-compiled asset tracker application, but I had same results when running my own compiled versions (haven't tested on NCS 1.6.0 though, only used NCS 1.5.0 with Zephyr 2.4.99.

(As said CAT-M works, let me know if a success log of that for cross comparison will be helpful).

Btw, to get DNS working on NB IoT I had to use legacy PCO mode with o2 / Telefonica in Germany (June 2021).
